Kraków Travel Guide: Where to Eat, Stay & Explore

Poland's most beautiful city pairs a fairy-tale Old Town with a soulful Jewish quarter, a thriving coffee scene, and some of Europe's most moving history.

Last updated February 17, 202515 min read

Kraków is the rare European capital-that-once-was where the medieval core survived the 20th century almost untouched. The Old Town, with its vast Main Market Square and the trumpet call that sounds hourly from St. Mary's Basilica, looks much as it did when kings were crowned at Wawel. Spared the wartime destruction that flattened Warsaw, the city feels lived-in rather than rebuilt.

This is also a city of layers. Just south of the Old Town, Kazimierz holds centuries of Jewish history in its synagogues and squares, now woven through with bars, galleries, and some of Poland's best food. Across the river in Podgórze, the former ghetto and Schindler's Factory tell harder stories that no visit should skip.

Add a young, design-savvy population (Kraków is a major university town), cheap and excellent food, and a coffee culture to rival any in Central Europe, and you have a place that rewards both a long weekend and a slow week. It is walkable, affordable, and endlessly photogenic.

Best time to visit

Late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September) are the sweet spots: mild days, long light, and gardens in bloom or turning gold without peak-summer crowds. July and August are warm and busy, with the most festivals but also the most tour groups on the square. December brings one of Europe's loveliest Christmas markets and the szopki (nativity crib) tradition, though it is cold and dark. Winter is genuinely frigid but atmospheric, and a fine time to combine the city with skiing near Zakopane. Time a visit to the Jewish Culture Festival (late June) or Wianki, the midsummer wreaths celebration on the Vistula, if you can.

Getting around

Kraków John Paul II Airport (Balice, KRK) sits about 11 km west of the center; the train to Kraków Główny station takes around 20 minutes and is the easiest way in, with taxis and ride-hail (Bolt and Uber both work well and are cheap) as alternatives. The historic core is compact and best explored on foot, with cars largely banned from the Old Town. For longer hops, the tram network is extensive, frequent, and inexpensive (buy tickets via the Jakdojade app). Skip taxis hailed off the rank near tourist spots; use Bolt or Uber instead to avoid overcharging.

Good to know

Before you visit

MoneyPoland uses the złoty (PLN), not the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including small cafes and market stalls, but carry a little cash for tips and traditional milk bars.
LanguagePolish is the language, but English is widely spoken in central Kraków, especially among younger people and in hospitality. A few words (dzień dobry for hello, dziękuję for thank you) go a long way.
Getting aroundThe center is highly walkable and largely car-free. Trams and buses are cheap and efficient (use the Jakdojade app for tickets and routes), and Bolt or Uber are inexpensive for longer trips; avoid taxis touting near tourist sights.
TippingTipping around 10% is customary in restaurants for good service. Note that saying 'thank you' when handing over payment can be taken to mean 'keep the change,' so state the amount clearly if you want change back.
EtiquetteTreat Auschwitz-Birkenau, the synagogues, and ghetto memorials with quiet respect: dress modestly, keep voices low, and follow photography rules. Cover shoulders and knees when entering churches.
Power & SIMPlugs are European Type E (230V); bring an adapter. Prepaid SIMs from Play, Orange, or Plus are cheap and EU roaming is included, but most travelers do fine on a local eSIM.
SafetyKraków is very safe by European standards. Watch for ordinary pickpocketing in crowds on the Main Square and on busy trams, and be wary of overpriced 'fun' bars and aggressive club promoters around Kazimierz at night.

Book Wawel Castle interior tickets in advance, as daily numbers for the royal apartments and cathedral are capped. book 1-2 weeks ahead

Buy timed tickets for Schindler's Factory Museum online, as same-day entry frequently sells out. book 1-2 weeks ahead
EU, US, UK, and many other travelers enter Poland visa-free for short stays; check ETIAS authorization requirements before traveling. check before booking
If visiting in December, plan around the Christmas Market dates on the Main Square and book accommodation early.

Kraków packs an astonishing amount into a walkable, affordable city: royal grandeur on Wawel hill, pierogi and craft beer in Kazimierz, and day trips that range from the soul-shaking to the spectacular. Linger over coffee, listen for the trumpet on the square, and let the layers reveal themselves. Start planning, and Poland's most beautiful city will reward every hour you give it.
