Tallinn packs an outsized amount of history, atmosphere, and invention into a small footprint. Its Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval centers in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage maze of cobbled lanes, Gothic spires, merchant houses, and stout city walls that look lifted straight from a fairy tale. Walk ten minutes in any direction and the centuries fall away.
But this is no museum piece. Estonia is famously digital (this is the country that gave the world Skype and a near-paperless government), and that future-facing energy shows up in repurposed factory districts, a serious coffee culture, and a restaurant scene that turns foraged Nordic-Baltic ingredients into some of the most exciting cooking in the region.
Add a walkable seafront, leafy palace parks, and ferries that whisk you to Helsinki in two hours, and you have a capital that rewards both a quick city break and a slow, curious stay. Come for the spires, linger for the rye bread, the saunas, and the long summer light.
Summer (June through August) is peak season for good reason: long days, mild temperatures around 18-22C, open-air cafes, and a packed festival calendar. Late June brings Jaanipaev (Midsummer), the most beloved holiday of the year, and the every-fifth-year Song and Dance Celebration is a spectacular event to time a trip around. May and September are the sweet-spot shoulder months with thinner crowds and pleasant weather. Winter is cold and dark but genuinely magical when the Christmas Market fills Town Hall Square with mulled wine and snow; just pack serious layers, as January can sit well below freezing.
Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport sits just 4 km from the center, and tram line 4 connects it to the city in about 15 minutes, with taxis and Bolt rides taking around 10. Many visitors also arrive by ferry from Helsinki or Stockholm at the passenger port, a short walk or tram ride from Old Town. Once you are here, central Tallinn is best explored on foot, since the Old Town is largely pedestrianized and compact. For longer hops, the tram, bus, and trolley network is cheap and efficient (public transport is even free for registered Tallinn residents), and the Bolt ride-hailing app, founded here, is reliable and inexpensive. Avoid driving in the Old Town, where cobbles and restrictions make it more trouble than it is worth.
