Srinagar is Kashmir's lake city, famous for Dal Lake shikara rides, carved wooden houseboats, and the Mughal gardens (Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi). Base yourself on or near Dal Lake or in the Boulevard Road area, eat wazwan (the multi-course Kashmiri feast built around rogan josh and gushtaba), and use the city as a launchpad for day trips to Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Three to four days covers the city and one or two mountain excursions.
Srinagar is the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and the beating heart of the Kashmir Valley, a city built around water. Wooden shikaras glide across Dal Lake, carved houseboats line the shore, and terraced Mughal gardens climb the hills that the emperors once called paradise on earth. It sits at roughly 1,585 meters (5,200 feet), ringed by the snow-dusted Himalayas.
The old city is a warren of brick lanes, timber mosques, and the smell of saffron, walnut wood, and fresh bread from wood-fired tandoors. Kashmir has centuries of Persian, Central Asian, and Mughal influence baked into its food, its papier-mache craft, and its Pashmina looms.
Most travelers come for the scenery, but Srinagar rewards those who slow down: a dawn ride across a mirror-still lake, a slow lunch of wazwan, a walk through Nishat Bagh with the mountains reflected in the fountains. It is also the gateway to Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg, some of the finest alpine country in India.
The most popular window is April to October. Spring (April-May) brings almond and tulip blossoms and the famous Tulip Garden, which opens for a few weeks from late March or early April. Summer (June-August) is warm, green, and busiest, with pleasant days around 25-30C and the valley at its most lush; book well ahead. Autumn (September-October) is arguably the prettiest, when the chinar trees turn crimson and gold. Winter (December-February) is cold and often snowy, with sub-zero nights, but it is magical for those wanting frozen lakes and easy access to skiing in Gulmarg. Time a trip to the Tulip Garden bloom or the autumn chinar color if you can.
Srinagar International Airport (SXR) sits about 12-15 km southwest of the city and has frequent flights from Delhi (roughly 80-90 minutes) plus Mumbai and other hubs; note security checks are strict, so arrive early. From the airport, prepaid taxis and pre-arranged hotel pickups are the easiest way in (around 30-45 minutes to Dal Lake). In the city, hire a taxi or driver for the day, use auto-rickshaws for short hops, and take a shikara to cross or explore Dal Lake. App-based ride-hailing is limited, so agree fares in advance or book a car through your hotel. Traffic around the Boulevard and old city can be slow in peak season.
