Pune Travel Guide: Where to Eat, Stay & Explore the Queen of the Deccan

A local-minded guide to Maharashtra's cultural capital, from Peshwa-era forts and Mastani milkshakes to leafy Koregaon Park cafes.

Last updated June 28, 202615 min read
Quick answer

Pune rewards two to three days: explore historic Old Pune (Shaniwar Wada, Dagdusheth Ganpati temple, the Aga Khan Palace) by day and base yourself in leafy Koregaon Park or Kalyani Nagar for the best cafes, restaurants, and nightlife. The city is famous for Maharashtrian street food, spicy misal pav, Kolhapuri mutton, and the Mastani milkshake. It also makes an easy launchpad for hill-station day trips to Lonavala, Sinhagad Fort, and Mahabaleshwar.

Pune sits just inland from Mumbai on the Deccan plateau, two hours up the Western Ghats and a world away from the coastal frenzy. Once the seat of the Maratha Peshwas and later a favored cantonment of the British, it carries its history lightly: crumbling fort gates and old wadas share streets with software parks, German-engineering plants, and one of India's densest concentrations of universities. Locals call it the Oxford of the East, and the student energy is everywhere.

It is a city of two tempos. Old Pune, around Shaniwar Wada and the Tulsi Baug bazaars, is loud, devotional, and delicious. The east side, Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar, runs on flat whites, craft beer, and brunch. Between them sits a food culture worth flying in for, from fiery Kolhapuri mutton to the city's beloved invention, the Mastani, a thick milkshake crowned with ice cream.

Add a backdrop of green hills and Sahyadri forts that turn emerald in the monsoon, plus easy escapes to Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar, and Pune makes a rewarding two- or three-day stop, or a calmer base than Mumbai for exploring western Maharashtra.

Best time to visit

The best window is November to February, when days are dry and pleasant (around 15-30C) and the festival calendar peaks. Ganesh Chaturthi, in late August or September, is Pune's signature spectacle, with the Dagdusheth and other mandals drawing huge crowds; book accommodation well ahead. The monsoon (June to September) is dramatic and green, ideal for fort treks and the Lonavala-Mahabaleshwar drives, though downpours can disrupt plans. Avoid peak summer (April to early June), when temperatures push past 38C.

Getting around

Pune International Airport (PNQ) in Lohegaon has growing domestic connections plus some international routes; many travelers also fly into Mumbai and drive the 3-3.5 hour Expressway. Frequent trains and Shivneri AC buses link the two cities. In town, Ola and Uber are cheap and the easiest way around, with auto-rickshaws good for short hops (insist on the meter or agree a fare first). The Pune Metro now covers key corridors and is handy for crossing the city, but old-town lanes are best walked. Traffic is heavy at rush hour, so plan east-west crossings accordingly.

Good to know

Before you visit

Getting aroundOla and Uber are cheap, plentiful, and the simplest option. Use auto-rickshaws for short hops (meter or agreed fare), and the Pune Metro for crossing the city quickly. Old-town lanes are best on foot.
MoneyIndia runs largely on UPI, but foreign cards cannot use it; carry some cash for street food, autos, temples, and small shops, and cards for restaurants and hotels. ATMs are widespread.
LanguageMarathi is the local language and Hindi is widely understood; English is common in cafes, hotels, and with younger people. A few words of Marathi (namaskar, dhanyavaad) are warmly received.
EtiquetteDress modestly at temples and remove shoes before entering; cover shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing people and inside places of worship.
SafetyPune is generally safe and walkable, with normal big-city precautions for traffic, pickpockets in crowded bazaars, and late nights. Cross roads carefully, as traffic is dense and assertive.
Food & waterDrink bottled or filtered water and ease into street food. Busy stalls with high turnover, like those on a guided food walk, are the safest bet for first-timers.
Power & SIMIndia uses 230V with Type C, D, and M plugs; bring a universal adapter. A local prepaid SIM (Airtel or Jio) is cheap with abundant data; bring your passport and a photo to activate one.
