Pokhara Travel Guide: Where to Eat, Stay, Trek & Unwind

Nepal's lakeside adventure capital, where the Annapurnas rise straight off the water and every trek to the high Himalaya begins.

Last updated June 28, 202616 min read
Quick answer

Pokhara is Nepal's lakeside adventure hub and the main gateway to the Annapurna treks. Base yourself in Lakeside (Baidam) along Phewa Lake for the best cafes, restaurants, and easy access to paragliding off Sarangkot, sunrise viewpoints, and trailheads. Come for the Himalayan views and momos, dal bhat, and Newari food, and stay two to three days if you are not trekking, longer if you are.

Pokhara is Nepal's most relaxed city, a lakeside town that trades the chaos of Kathmandu for paragliders drifting over Phewa Lake and the white wall of the Annapurnas filling the northern sky. On a clear morning the fishtail peak of Machhapuchhre reflects in the water, and the whole place feels built for taking it slow between adventures.

This is the launchpad for some of the most famous treks on earth, from the gentle sunrise climb at Poon Hill to the long pull up to Annapurna Base Camp. But you do not need to lace up boots to enjoy it: Lakeside is wall-to-wall cafes, momo joints, rooftop bars, and outfitters renting kayaks by the hour.

Pokhara has long been a crossroads. Tibetan refugees settled here from the 1960s, traders once moved salt and wool along these valleys, and today a steady flow of trekkers, paragliders, and pilgrims (the World Peace Pagoda crowns the ridge above the lake) gives the city its easy, international hum.

Best time to visit

The clearest mountain views come in the dry seasons: October and November (peak, with crisp air and the post-monsoon green still on the hills) and March to April (warm, with rhododendrons blooming on the trekking trails). These are also the busiest and priciest months, so book ahead. December and January are quiet and cold at altitude but often crystal clear over the lake. The monsoon (June to mid-September) brings warm rain, lush valleys, leeches on the trails, and clouds that hide the peaks for days, though prices drop sharply. Time a visit to October for Dashain and Tihar, Nepal's biggest festivals.

Getting around

Most travelers reach Pokhara from Kathmandu, either on a 25-minute domestic flight or a 6-to-8-hour drive by tourist bus (around $10-30) along the winding Prithvi Highway. Pokhara International Airport handles flights, though scheduling for international routes remains limited; the older domestic airport is closer to Lakeside. Once here, Lakeside is flat and walkable end to end. For Sarangkot, the World Peace Pagoda, or Devi's Fall, use a metered taxi, ride-hail apps like Pathao and inDrive (much cheaper than negotiating with taxis), or rent a scooter for around $10-15 a day. Cross Phewa Lake by paddling a colorful wooden doonga boat.

Where to stay

Neighborhoods & hotels

Lakeside (Baidam)The heart of the action, strung along Phewa Lake with the densest cluster of cafes, restaurants, bars, and outfitters. Best for first-timers and anyone who wants to walk everywhere; the northern (quieter) end has lake views without the late-night noise.
Damside (Pardi)A calmer lakeside pocket near the dam at the south end, with good mountain views and a slower pace. Suits travelers and families who want to be near the water but away from the busiest strip.
SarangkotThe ridge above town, famous for sunrise over the Annapurnas and as the main paragliding launch. Stay here for a night if you want to wake to the mountains, though it is a 30-40 minute drive from Lakeside restaurants.
Sedi / Khapaudi (northern lakeshore)Quiet boutique resorts spread along the far northern shore of Phewa Lake, surrounded by greenery and rice terraces. Ideal for a peaceful, scenic base, best with your own scooter or taxi rides into town.

Good to know

Before you visit

MoneyNepal uses the Nepalese rupee (NPR). Carry cash, as many small cafes, guesthouses, and trekking villages don't take cards; ATMs in Lakeside dispense rupees but cap withdrawals (often around 35,000 NPR) and charge a fee. Bring USD cash as a backup for permits and tours.
PermitsTrekking in the Annapurna region requires a TIMS card and an ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area) permit, arranged in Pokhara or Kathmandu, or by your trekking operator. Carry your passport and a couple of passport photos.
Getting aroundLakeside is walkable; for everything else use the Pathao or inDrive apps for cheap, fair-priced rides, or rent a scooter for around $10-15 a day. Agree taxi fares before getting in, as meters are rarely used.
LanguageNepali is the official language, but English is widely spoken across Lakeside's tourist businesses. A few words of Nepali (namaste for hello, dhanyabad for thank you) go a long way.
Altitude & safetyPokhara itself sits at a comfortable 820m, but treks climb fast: ascend gradually, hydrate, and know the signs of altitude sickness above 3,000m. The city is very safe; the main risks are road traffic and slippery monsoon trails.
TippingTipping is appreciated but not mandatory; round up at restaurants or leave 10% for good service. On treks, tipping guides and porters at the end is customary, roughly 10-15% of the trip cost split among the team.
Power & SIMPower is 230V with European-style round-pin sockets (types C, D, M); bring an adapter. Buy a Ncell or Nepal Telecom tourist SIM with data cheaply on arrival; bring your passport for registration. Power cuts happen, so a power bank is wise.

Plan-ahead checklist

Book multi-day Annapurna treks (Poon Hill, ABC) and arrange a licensed guide in advance, especially in October-November and March-April peak seasons. book 2-4 weeks ahead
Arrange your ACAP permit and TIMS card before heading to the trailhead; your operator can handle this if you book a guided trek.
Reserve paragliding flights ahead in peak season, as good-weather morning slots off Sarangkot fill quickly. book a few days ahead
Book Kathmandu-Pokhara flights or tourist buses early around major festivals (Dashain and Tihar in October) when transport sells out. book 1-2 weeks ahead
Bring enough cash for treks; villages have no ATMs and limited card acceptance.

Few places let you glide over a Himalayan lake at sunrise, trek to an 8,000m amphitheater of peaks, and end the day with momos and live music by the water. Pokhara is both the doorway to the Annapurnas and a destination in its own right. Lace up, look up, and start planning, the mountains are waiting.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Pokhara?
Two to three days is enough to enjoy Lakeside, Phewa Lake, Sarangkot sunrise, the World Peace Pagoda, and a paragliding flight. If you plan to trek the Annapurna region, add 3 to 10 days depending on the route, from the short Poon Hill trek to Annapurna Base Camp.
Where should I stay in Pokhara?
Stay in Lakeside (Baidam) along Phewa Lake, the walkable hub for cafes, restaurants, and outfitters. The quieter northern end of Lakeside and Damside suit those wanting calm, while Sarangkot is best for a sunrise-and-paragliding base.
Is Pokhara expensive?
No, Pokhara is very affordable. Budget guesthouses run $10-25 a night, a filling Nepali meal costs $3-6, and even big-ticket adventures like paragliding ($78) or the world's steepest zipline ($70) are reasonable by global standards. Multi-day treks are the main larger expense.
How do you get to Pokhara from Kathmandu?
You can fly in about 25 minutes or take a tourist bus along the Prithvi Highway, a 6-to-8-hour drive costing roughly $10-30. The flight offers Himalayan views on a clear day; the bus is cheaper and more scenic if you don't mind the winding road.
Is Pokhara worth visiting?
Absolutely. Pokhara pairs jaw-dropping Annapurna views with a relaxed lakeside vibe, world-class paragliding and trekking, and great food, making it both an adventure base and a place to unwind. It's the highlight of many Nepal itineraries.
What is the best time to visit Pokhara for mountain views?
October-November and March-April offer the clearest skies and best Annapurna views, along with ideal trekking weather. December-January is cold but often crystal clear, while the June-September monsoon frequently hides the peaks behind clouds.
