Manali is a Himalayan resort town in Himachal Pradesh best for mountain scenery, adventure sports, and café culture. Base yourself in laid-back Old Manali or riverside Vashisht for atmosphere, or near Mall Road for convenience. Don't miss Hadimba Temple, the Solang Valley, Vashisht hot springs, and a day trip to Kasol and Manikaran; the food scene runs from Himachali trout and rajma-chawal to the Israeli, Italian, and Tibetan cafes of Old Manali.
Manali sits at roughly 2,050 meters in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, where the Beas River runs cold and clear past deodar forests and apple orchards, with snow peaks rising on every side. It began life as a quiet trading post on the route to Lahaul and Ladakh, gathered a hippie-trail reputation in the 1970s, and is now one of India's most popular mountain getaways for honeymooners, backpackers, families, and adventure seekers alike.
The town really has two faces. New Manali, around the Mall Road, is busy, commercial, and packed in peak season. A short walk uphill, Old Manali and the riverside village of Vashisht keep the slower, café-and-guesthouse mood that drew travelers here in the first place.
Come for the scenery and you stay for the range of it: paragliding and skiing in Solang, a sacred cedar temple in the forest, sulphur hot springs you can soak in for free, and the gateway to some of the Himalayas' most celebrated treks and the epic Manali to Leh highway.
The most reliable months are March to June, when days are mild (15-25C), orchards bloom, and the high passes begin to open. July to mid-September brings the monsoon, which means lush greenery but real landslide risk on mountain roads. October and November are crisp, clear, and quieter, ideal for trekking. December to February is cold and snowy: great for snow play in Solang and Sethan, though Rohtang Pass and the road to Leh are closed by snow until roughly May or June. Peak crowds (and prices) hit during May-June summer holidays and the Christmas-New Year week.
Most travelers arrive by road from Delhi (about 12-14 hours) or Chandigarh (8-9 hours) on overnight Volvo-style buses or by private car; book HRTC or HPTDC buses in advance for peak dates. The nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu), about 50 km south, with limited flights, so many fly to Chandigarh and drive. In town, Old Manali, Vashisht, and Mall Road are walkable, but the steep lanes and traffic can be slow; use local taxis (fixed union rates, negotiate or confirm the board price) or autos for short hops. For Solang, Rohtang, and day trips, hire a taxi for the day or join an organized tour, as ride-hailing apps barely operate here.
