Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by a deep strait but a world apart in pace. Where Bali hums, Lombok exhales. This is an island of empty white-sand bays, surf breaks that still feel like secrets, and the towering cone of Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, looming over rice terraces and Sasak villages.
The Sasak are the island's Indigenous people, predominantly Muslim, and their culture gives Lombok a distinct rhythm: woven ikat textiles, fiery ayam taliwang chicken, and call to prayer drifting over the paddies. Tourism here is younger and lighter-footed than Bali's, which is precisely the appeal.
Come for the trifecta: trekking the Rinjani caldera, island-hopping the Gilis, and the laid-back surf-and-sand scene around Kuta in the south. Add a few quiet days in the green hills of Tetebatu and you have one of Southeast Asia's most rewarding islands.
The dry season runs roughly May to October and is the sweet spot: sunny days, calm seas for snorkeling, and the only window the Rinjani trekking route is reliably open (it typically closes January through March for rains and safety). July and August are the busiest and best for surf and clear water. The shoulder months of May, June, September, and October offer good weather with thinner crowds. The wet season (November to March) brings warm downpours, lush scenery, and lower prices, but rougher boat crossings and frequent Rinjani closures. The Sasak Bau Nyale sea-worm festival on the southern beaches each February or March is a memorable cultural draw.
Most visitors fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP) near Praya in the south, with direct connections from Bali (a 30-minute hop), Jakarta, Surabaya, and Kuala Lumpur. Fast boats also run from Bali's Padangbai and Serangan to the Gili Islands and Bangsal. Lombok has no metro or rail, so getting around means renting a scooter (cheap and freeing if you are confident), hiring a private car with driver for the day (the easiest way to cover ground), or using the Grab and Gojek ride-hail apps, which work near the airport and main towns but thin out in rural areas. On the Gili Islands there are no motorized vehicles at all: you walk, cycle, or take a cidomo pony cart.
