Lahore is Pakistan's cultural and culinary capital, best known for its Mughal monuments (Badshahi Mosque, Lahore Fort, Wazir Khan Mosque), the atmospheric Walled City, and legendary food on Fort Road and Gawalmandi food streets. Base yourself in Gulberg for modern hotels, cafes, and easy access to both the old city and the airport. Don't miss a night food tour, the Wagah border ceremony at sunset, and slow mornings of nihari and lassi.
Lahore is Pakistan's cultural heart, a city of poets, food obsessives, and Mughal grandeur that has been a capital of empires for a thousand years. There is an old saying here: "Jinnay Lahore nai vekhya, o jamya hi nai" (one who hasn't seen Lahore hasn't been born). Once you have wandered the Walled City at dusk and eaten your way down Fort Road, you understand why.
The city wears its history openly. The red sandstone of Badshahi Mosque and Lahore Fort anchor the old town, while the British left behind grand colonial avenues, the Mall, and the leafy campus of Government College. Add the tiled splendor of Wazir Khan Mosque, the gardens of Shalimar, and a contemporary art and cafe scene in Gulberg, and you have a city that rewards both history buffs and pleasure-seekers.
Above all, Lahore is about food and hospitality. This is the home of charcoal-grilled tikka, slow-cooked nihari, paya, falooda, and some of the best street food on the subcontinent. Lahoris are generous, funny, and fiercely proud of their city, and they will happily argue with you about where to find the best haleem.
The sweet spot is October to March, when days are mild and sunny (roughly 15-25C) and the city's gardens and rooftops are at their best. November and February are ideal. Spring brings the Basant kite-flying spirit (though the festival itself is restricted) and the Lahore Literary Festival, usually in late February. Avoid the brutal pre-monsoon heat of May and June, when temperatures regularly top 40C, and note that the monsoon (July-August) brings humidity and flooding in places. Ramadan shifts daytime dining dramatically but makes for spectacular iftar feasts after sunset.
Most visitors arrive at Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE), about 15km southeast of the center; prearranged hotel pickups or the Careem/inDrive ride-hailing apps are the easiest way in (roughly 800-1,500 PKR to Gulberg). Within the city, Careem and inDrive are cheap, reliable, and remove all haggling, so use them rather than flagging taxis. The Orange Line metro and Speedo bus cover some routes but are crowded and limited for tourists. In the Walled City, walking is the only real option, and a guided rickshaw or walking tour is the best way to navigate its lanes.
