Summer (June to August) is peak season, with long daylight, sea swimming, terrace dining, and events like Helsinki Pride and the Flow Festival in August; it is the liveliest but also the busiest and priciest time. Late spring (May) and early autumn (September) are pleasant shoulder seasons with fewer crowds. Winter is cold and dark, with only a few hours of daylight in December, but it brings a cozy sauna-and-candlelight mood, Christmas markets on Senate Square, and the chance of snow. Note that many Finns leave the city on their own summer holidays in July, so some smaller restaurants and shops close for a few weeks.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) sits about 18 km north of the center; the P and I commuter trains reach Helsinki Central Station in roughly 30 minutes for around 4.50 euros, far cheaper than a taxi (about 45 to 55 euros). The city center is very walkable, and the HSL network of trams, metro, buses, and ferries is excellent; a single ticket runs about 3.20 euros and a day ticket around 9 euros, easiest bought through the HSL app. Tram 2 and 3 loop past most sights, the public ferry to Suomenlinna is part of the transit system, and ride-hailing (Bolt, Uber, taxis) is reliable but pricey.
