Geneva Travel Guide: Where to Eat, Stay & Explore Lake Léman

A diplomatic city of lakefront promenades, watchmakers, and fondue, with the French Alps right at the doorstep.

Last updated June 28, 202617 min read
Quick answer

Geneva's must-do experiences are walking the medieval Old Town up to St. Pierre Cathedral, seeing the Jet d'Eau on the lakefront, and touring the Palais des Nations (UN) and Red Cross museum in the International district. The city is known for cheese fondue, raclette, and world-class chocolate, plus easy day trips to Chamonix and Gruyères. Base yourself in the Old Town or around the lakefront Rive Gauche for the most walkable, central stay.

Geneva sits at the western tip of Lake Léman, where the Rhône pours out of the lake and the snow-capped Alps frame the horizon on a clear day. It is a small city that punches far above its size: the European headquarters of the United Nations, the birthplace of the Red Cross, and a watchmaking capital where shop windows glitter with Patek Philippe and Rolex.

Despite the diplomatic gravity, Geneva is also relaxed and walkable. The cobbled Old Town climbs to the cathedral where Calvin preached, lakefront promenades fill with joggers and swimmers in summer, and the Jet d'Eau shoots a plume of water 140 meters into the sky as the city's unofficial mascot.

French is the local language, but you will hear English everywhere, and roughly 40 percent of residents are foreign nationals. The flip side of all that international wealth is cost: Geneva is genuinely one of the most expensive cities in the world. Plan accordingly, and lean on lake swims, parks, and free museum days to balance the budget.

Best time to visit

The best months are May to September, when the lake is warm enough to swim, terraces buzz, and the Alps are clear for day trips. Summer is peak and pricey; June and September are the sweet spot for good weather with smaller crowds. The Fêtes de Genève (August) bring concerts and fireworks over the lake, while December layers on Christmas markets and the historic Escalade festival (December 11-12), which commemorates the city repelling a 1602 invasion with costumes, bonfires, and chocolate cauldrons. Winter is cold and grey in the city but doubles as a launchpad for Alpine skiing.

Getting around

Geneva Airport (GVA) is just 4 km from the center, about 7 minutes by train to Cornavin station; grab a free public-transport ticket from the machine in the baggage hall before you exit. Once in town, almost everything central is walkable, and your hotel gives you a free Geneva Transport Card covering trams, buses, and the yellow Mouettes water taxis that scoot across the lake. Trains are excellent for day trips, taxis are very expensive, and you genuinely do not need a car.

Good to know

Before you visit

MoneySwitzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF), not the euro, though some places accept euros at poor rates. Geneva is very expensive: budget for 25-40 CHF for a casual meal and far more for dinner. Cards are accepted nearly everywhere.
Getting aroundYour hotel provides a free Geneva Transport Card covering trams, buses, and lake Mouettes for the length of your stay. The airport offers a free transit ticket from a machine in the baggage hall. The center is compact and walkable, so you rarely need taxis, which are pricey.
LanguageFrench is the official language, but English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and shops. A simple 'bonjour' and 'merci' go a long way.
TippingService is included by law, so tipping is not expected. Rounding up or leaving 5-10 percent for excellent service is a kind gesture, not an obligation.
EtiquettePunctuality matters and shops generally close on Sundays. Many museums close on Mondays, so check ahead. Recycling and quiet hours are taken seriously.
Power & SIMSwitzerland uses Type J plugs at 230V; bring an adapter. EU roaming does not apply, so consider an eSIM (Salt, Sunrise, and Swisscom have good coverage) for data.
SafetyGeneva is very safe, with low violent crime. Stay alert for occasional pickpockets around Cornavin station and Pâquis at night, but otherwise the city is comfortable to walk after dark.
Before you go

Plan-ahead checklist

Book a UN (Palais des Nations) guided tour in advance and bring photo ID; slots and ID checks are required. book 1-2 weeks ahead
Reserve popular day trips to Chamonix, Gruyères, or Glacier 3000 ahead, as summer and weekend departures fill up. book 1-2 weeks ahead
Pick up your free airport transit ticket from the machine in the baggage hall before exiting, and collect your Geneva Transport Card at hotel check-in.
Reserve dinner tables at popular fondue spots like Café du Soleil, especially on weekends and in winter. a few days ahead
If visiting in December, plan around the Escalade festival (December 11-12) for costumes, processions, and chocolate cauldrons.

Geneva rewards travelers who slow down: a morning swim off the Pâquis pier, an afternoon climbing the cathedral towers, and an evening of bubbling fondue with the Alps glowing pink across the lake. Use it as your gateway to Mont Blanc and the Swiss countryside, or simply linger by the water. However you plan it, Geneva makes an unforgettable, lake-and-mountain start to any Swiss adventure.

Yes, Geneva is one of the world's most expensive cities. Expect high hotel and restaurant prices, but you can save with lake swims at Bains des Pâquis, free museum days, the free transport card, and budget meals like the roast chicken at Chez ma Cousine.
Where should I stay in Geneva?
First-timers do best in the Old Town or along the Rive Gauche lakefront for walkability and central sights. Pâquis offers better value and lively nightlife, while the Nations district suits those focused on the UN and international institutions.
How do you get around Geneva?
The center is very walkable, and hotels provide a free Geneva Transport Card for trams, buses, and lake taxis. The airport is a 7-minute train ride from the center, so you do not need a car.
What food is Geneva known for?
Geneva is known for Swiss cheese fondue and raclette, plus world-class chocolate (try the local pavés). Lake fish like perch fillets (filets de perche) is a regional specialty.
Is Geneva worth visiting?
Yes, especially as a base for lake activities and Alpine day trips. The Old Town, lakefront, international institutions, and easy access to Mont Blanc and Swiss villages make it a rewarding stop, provided you budget for the high prices.
