Funchal Travel Guide: Where to Eat, Stay & Explore in Madeira

A local-savvy guide to Madeira's capital: subtropical gardens, levada walks, poncha bars, and some of the Atlantic's best whale watching.

Last updated June 30, 202616 min read
Quick answer

Funchal is the walkable capital of Madeira, best explored from the Zona Velha (old town) and the seafront promenade. Don't miss the Monte cable car and wicker toboggan ride, Mercado dos Lavradores, Cabo Girao skywalk, and a whale and dolphin boat trip. Eat espetada (beef skewers), black scabbardfish with banana, and bolo do caco bread, and wash it down with poncha. Base yourself in or near the old town for the best mix of dining, walkability, and atmosphere.

Funchal spills down a natural amphitheater of green hills toward the Atlantic, its red-tiled roofs stacked between banana terraces and the sea. As the capital of Madeira, a Portuguese island closer to Africa than to Lisbon, it has been a mid-ocean crossroads since the 1400s, when sugar and later Madeira wine made it rich. Today it is the launchpad for the island's wild interior: laurel forests, knife-edge peaks, and the famous levada irrigation channels you can walk for hours.

The city itself rewards slow days. You can ride a cable car up to the village of Monte, toboggan back down in a wicker basket steered by men in straw hats, then wander a flower market and a fishmongers' hall that have run for generations. The old town's painted doors, the seafront promenade, and the historic wine lodges all sit within an easy walk.

Mild year-round weather (rarely below 16C in winter or above 26C in summer) makes Funchal a true all-seasons destination. Come for the food, the gardens, and the sea, and stay for the dramatic drives and hikes that fan out across one of the Atlantic's most spectacular islands.

Best time to visit

Funchal is a year-round destination thanks to its subtropical climate, with daytime highs around 19-22C in winter and 24-26C in summer, and warm Atlantic swimming from June to October. April to June and September to October are the sweet spots for hiking and lower crowds. Time a visit around the Flower Festival (late April/early May), the Atlantic Festival fireworks on Saturdays in June, the wine harvest celebrations in late August/September, or the spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks display, which draws cruise ships and books out hotels months ahead.

Getting around

Madeira Airport (FNC, also called Cristiano Ronaldo Airport) sits about 20 km east of Funchal, roughly a 25-30 minute drive; the Aerobus airport shuttle runs to the city for around 5-8 euros, and a taxi costs about 25-30 euros (fixed daytime rates). Central Funchal is walkable but steep, with the old town, market, cathedral, and promenade all close together. Use the orange Horarios do Funchal city buses, Bolt ride-hail (cheaper and easier than hailing taxis), or your feet; renting a car is worth it for a day or two if you plan to explore the island independently, though parking in the center is tight and mountain roads are narrow.

Good to know

Before you visit

MoneyMadeira uses the euro. Cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for small tavernas, market stalls, poncha bars, and the toboggan ride. ATMs (Multibanco) are easy to find in the center.
LanguagePortuguese is the language, but English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and tours given how many visitors come from the UK and Germany. A few words of Portuguese (obrigado/obrigada) are appreciated.
Getting aroundCentral Funchal is walkable but very hilly; use Bolt ride-hail for cheap point-to-point trips and orange city buses for longer hops. Rent a car only if you plan to explore the island, and be confident with steep, narrow mountain roads and tunnels.
TippingTipping is modest and not obligatory. Rounding up or leaving 5-10 percent for good restaurant service is normal; a euro or two for taxis and guides is appreciated.
SafetyFunchal is very safe with low crime; the main hazards are practical ones like steep cobbles, sun exposure, and sudden weather changes in the mountains. Carry water, sun protection, and a layer when hiking.
Hiking & weatherLevada and mountain walks can be exposed, with tunnels, drop-offs, and fast-changing cloud. Bring proper shoes, a headlamp for tunnels, and check forecasts; the north and peaks can be cloudy while Funchal is sunny.
Power & SIMPortugal uses Type F plugs (230V); UK and US visitors need adapters. EU roaming works freely, and local prepaid SIMs or eSIMs (MEO, Vodafone, NOS) are easy to buy for data.

Funchal packs an extraordinary amount into one walkable, sea-facing city: a wicker toboggan ride down from the hills, a market full of fruit you've never tasted, poncha at a painted-door taverna, and an island of forests and cliffs an hour in any direction. Come hungry, lace up for a levada or two, and leave time for the Atlantic. Your Madeira adventure starts here.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Funchal?
Plan three to five days: one or two for Funchal itself (Monte cable car, market, old town, wine lodges) and the rest for day trips into the island's mountains, forests, and coast. A week lets you add levada hikes and a boat trip without rushing.
Where should I stay in Funchal?
First-timers and food lovers do best in or near the Zona Velha (old town) for walkable dining and atmosphere, while the Lido/Sao Martinho seafront suits those wanting pools and ocean views. The city center near the cathedral is the most convenient base for sightseeing and transport.
Is Funchal expensive?
Funchal is moderately priced and generally cheaper than mainland European capitals. A casual meal runs about 12-20 euros, poncha is a couple of euros, and many sights are free or low-cost, though boat tours and 4x4 day trips are the bigger spends at roughly 40-90 euros.
How do you get around Funchal and Madeira?
Central Funchal is walkable but steep, with cheap Bolt rides and orange city buses for longer trips. To explore the wider island, either rent a car (be ready for mountain roads) or join guided 4x4 and minibus tours.
Is Funchal worth visiting?
Yes. Funchal combines a walkable historic capital with subtropical gardens, excellent seafood, Madeira wine, and easy access to some of the Atlantic's most dramatic hiking and whale watching, all in a mild year-round climate.
What food is Funchal known for?
Signature dishes include espetada (beef skewers grilled on bay-laurel sticks), black scabbardfish (espada) often served with fried banana, limpets (lapas), and bolo do caco bread with garlic butter, washed down with poncha and Madeira wine.
