The high season is the Southern Hemisphere summer, December through February, when beaches are packed, prices peak, and the weather is hot (often 28-32°C) and lively. For the best balance, come in the shoulder months of March-April or October-November, when the sea is still warm enough to swim, crowds thin, and hotel rates drop. Winter (June-August) is cool, quiet, and often rainy, but it is prime time for land-based whale watching along the southern coast, when southern right whales visit. Surfers favor autumn and winter for cleaner swells.

Fly into Hercílio Luz International Airport (FLN), a modern terminal in the south of the island about 12-15 km from most beach areas; a taxi or Uber to Lagoa or downtown runs roughly R$40-90 depending on distance. A car is the single most useful thing you can have here, since beaches are spread across a large island and public transport is slow; rentals and ride-hail (Uber and 99 both work well) fill the gaps. Buses run through the central TICEN terminal but require transfers and time. Expect heavy traffic on summer weekends, especially on the roads into the north beaches and Lagoa.
