Florianópolis is an island city in southern Brazil famous for its 40-plus beaches, fresh oysters and seafood, and surf culture. Base yourself in Lagoa da Conceição for lagoon views, dining, and nightlife, in the north (Jurerê or Canasvieiras) for calm swimming beaches, or downtown for history and transit. Don't miss the beaches of the east coast (Mole, Joaquina, Campeche), a plate of local oysters, and a hike to Lagoinha do Leste.
Florianópolis, known across Brazil as the Ilha da Magia (Island of Magic), is the capital of Santa Catarina and one of the country's most beloved coastal escapes. Most of the city sits on a long, hilly island connected to the mainland by the landmark Hercílio Luz suspension bridge, and it packs in more than 40 beaches, from wild surf breaks to calm family coves.
The character shifts dramatically as you move around the island. The north is polished and busy with high-rise resorts and warm swimming beaches; the east and south stay rugged and green, ringed by Atlantic Forest and fishing villages settled by Azorean immigrants in the 1700s. In the middle sits Lagoa da Conceição, a saltwater lagoon that doubles as the island's nightlife and dining hub.
This is a place built for slow days and salt air: oysters pulled from the bay (Florianópolis produces the vast majority of Brazil's farmed oysters), sunset from a dune, a surf lesson at Praia Mole, and long lunches of fresh fish. It is easygoing, safe by Brazilian standards, and genuinely magical when the light drops over the lagoon.
The high season is the Southern Hemisphere summer, December through February, when beaches are packed, prices peak, and the weather is hot (often 28-32°C) and lively. For the best balance, come in the shoulder months of March-April or October-November, when the sea is still warm enough to swim, crowds thin, and hotel rates drop. Winter (June-August) is cool, quiet, and often rainy, but it is prime time for land-based whale watching along the southern coast, when southern right whales visit. Surfers favor autumn and winter for cleaner swells.
Fly into Hercílio Luz International Airport (FLN), a modern terminal in the south of the island about 12-15 km from most beach areas; a taxi or Uber to Lagoa or downtown runs roughly R$40-90 depending on distance. A car is the single most useful thing you can have here, since beaches are spread across a large island and public transport is slow; rentals and ride-hail (Uber and 99 both work well) fill the gaps. Buses run through the central TICEN terminal but require transfers and time. Expect heavy traffic on summer weekends, especially on the roads into the north beaches and Lagoa.

Plan-ahead checklist
Florianópolis rewards travelers who slow down: one day for the surf and dunes of the east, another for oysters and sunset in a southern fishing village, and an evening or two around the lagoon. Whether you come to learn to surf, hike to a hidden beach, or simply eat well by the water, the Island of Magic lives up to its name. Start mapping your beaches and book early for summer.
