Dubai is a city of superlatives that somehow still surprises you. In a single day you can ride a quad bike across red dunes, ride an elevator to the top of the world's tallest building, haggle for saffron in a centuries-old souk, and end the night on a rooftop overlooking a man-made archipelago shaped like a palm tree. Fifty years ago this was a modest trading and pearling port on a tidal creek; today it is one of the planet's most ambitious cities.
What makes Dubai work as a destination is the contrast. The futuristic skyline of Downtown and Dubai Marina gets the postcards, but Old Dubai, with its wind-tower houses, abra boat crossings, and spice-scented alleys, is where the city's soul lives. Add a population that is roughly 85 percent expat, and you get one of the most genuinely international food scenes anywhere: Emirati, Lebanese, Indian, Filipino, Iranian, and Japanese, often on the same block.
It is also remarkably easy to visit. English is spoken almost everywhere, the metro is clean and cheap, and the city is famously safe. Whether you come for a luxury splurge, a family beach holiday, or a quick stopover that turns into a love affair, Dubai delivers more than its glossy reputation suggests.
The sweet spot is November through March, when daytime highs sit in the pleasant 24-30C range and evenings are made for outdoor dining and desert trips. This is peak season, so hotel rates climb and big events fill the calendar: the Dubai Shopping Festival in winter, Art Dubai in spring, and a packed roster of concerts and sports. April and October are warm but workable shoulder months with better value. Avoid June through September if you can; summer temperatures regularly exceed 42C and most life retreats indoors to air conditioning, though hotel deals can be exceptional.
Most visitors arrive at Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the busiest in the world and about 15 minutes from Downtown by taxi; some budget carriers use Al Maktoum (DWC) further out. The Dubai Metro is spotless, cheap, and driverless, with the Red Line linking the airport, Downtown, and the Marina; buy a rechargeable Nol card at any station. Taxis are plentiful, metered, and reasonable, and Careem and Uber both operate. Distances are large and summer heat is brutal, so do not plan on walking long stretches; the city is built for cars and metro rather than strolling, with the notable exceptions of the Marina, Downtown, and Old Dubai.
