Cebu splits between historic Cebu City (Magellan's Cross, the Basilica del Santo Nino, and the best lechon in the Philippines) and Mactan Island, where the airport and beach resorts cluster. Base yourself in Cebu City near IT Park or Lahug for food and culture, or on Mactan for a resort beach stay. The must-do trips are Oslob whale sharks and Kawasan Falls canyoneering in the south, plus island hopping off Mactan, and you should not leave without eating Cebu lechon at least twice.
Cebu is the oldest city in the Philippines and the country's first Spanish settlement, a place where a 16th-century cross and a centuries-old ivory Santo Nino sit a short walk from air-conditioned malls and IT parks. Locals call it the Queen City of the South, and it earns the title: it is the busiest hub in the central Visayas, the launch pad for the archipelago's most famous beaches, and a food city with a fierce, well-founded pride in its roast pig.
Most travelers actually split their time between two Cebus. There is Cebu City proper, a dense, hilly, historic downtown with churches, ancestral houses, and street food, and there is Mactan Island across the bridge, where the airport and the beach resorts are. Between them lie the real reasons people fly here: whale sharks in the south, waterfalls you can rappel and jump through, and day boats to islands ringed by coral.
What ties it together is the food. Cebuano lechon (whole roast pig, its skin lacquered and crackling) is regularly called the best in the country, and eating your way through the versions is half the fun. Add warm weather most of the year, cheap ride-hailing, and English spoken almost everywhere, and Cebu becomes one of the easiest places in Southeast Asia to enjoy.
Cebu is warm and tropical year-round, with the driest, sunniest stretch from roughly December to May and the wetter, more humid months from June to November (typhoons are possible but Cebu is somewhat sheltered compared to Luzon). The peak season is December through April, when European and domestic tourists arrive; March to May brings the hottest temperatures. The single biggest event is the Sinulog Festival in mid-January, a massive religious street parade honoring the Santo Nino that draws over a million people; book hotels months ahead if you want to be here for it. For the best balance of good weather and lighter crowds, aim for late November or June.
Nearly everyone arrives at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) on Mactan Island, a modern terminal with a much-photographed wooden-arched design and direct flights across Asia. From the airport, use the Grab ride-hailing app rather than negotiating with taxis; a metered white taxi is fine too, but insist on the meter. Getting into Cebu City from Mactan takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic, which can be heavy. In the city, Grab is the easiest way to get around; jeepneys are cheap and iconic but confusing for first-timers. For day trips south to Oslob or Moalboal, a private van or a joined tour is far more practical than public buses.

Day Trips Worth Taking
Cebu is the springboard for some of the Visayas' best day trips, by van south or by fast ferry across the strait.

Before you visit
Plan-ahead checklist
Cebu rewards travelers who come hungry and up for adventure, whether that means cracking into lechon skin at a busy carinderia, jumping through a turquoise gorge to Kawasan Falls, or floating beside a whale shark at sunrise. Base yourself in the city, eat your way through the lechon houses, and give yourself at least one big day out south or on the water. Start planning, and the Queen City of the South will do the rest.
