Berat is a UNESCO-listed Ottoman town in central Albania famous for its white tiered houses (the City of a Thousand Windows), a hilltop castle you can walk into, and the Mangalem and Gorica quarters facing each other across the Osum River. Base yourself in or just below the old town, eat central Albanian dishes like stuffed peppers, byrek, and grilled meats paired with local Berat wine, and use the city as a launchpad for Osumi Canyon rafting and Mount Tomorr. Two days is enough for the town; add a third for the canyon.
Berat is the postcard everyone comes to Albania hoping to find: a hillside of white Ottoman houses stacked window above window, split by the Osum River and crowned by a castle that people still live inside. Nicknamed the City of a Thousand Windows, its Mangalem and Gorica quarters earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008 for one of the best-preserved Ottoman townscapes in the Balkans.
The city is small, walkable, and unhurried. You can cover the historic core on foot in a day, but the pleasure is in slowing down: coffee under a grapevine, a lunch of stuffed peppers and homemade wine, and a golden hour when the low sun sets those famous facades glowing above the river.
Berat also makes an excellent base for wilder Albania. The Osumi Canyon, an hour and a half southeast, delivers spring rafting and summer canyon swimming, while Mount Tomorr looms over the valley as a place of pilgrimage and hiking. Add genuinely low prices and warm hosts, and Berat is one of the best-value stops in Europe.
May, June, and September are the sweet spot: warm, dry days for wandering the old town, and manageable crowds. High summer (July to August) is hot, often above 33C, and busiest, though evenings by the river are lovely. Spring (March to early June) is prime time for Osumi Canyon rafting when snowmelt keeps the river high; by July the water drops and the canyon shifts to swimming and tubing. Winter is quiet, cool, and cheap, with occasional rain but crisp views. Time a trip for late August if you want the Mount Tomorr pilgrimage, one of the country's biggest religious gatherings.
Most travelers arrive via Tirana International Airport (TIA), about 2 to 2.5 hours away by road. Frequent furgon minibuses and buses run from Tirana's regional terminal to Berat (roughly 400-500 lek, about 2 hours); a private transfer or taxi runs around 40-60 euros. Once in Berat, the old town is best explored on foot, though the cobblestones up to the castle are steep and uneven, so wear sturdy shoes. Taxis are cheap for the castle climb or the bus station, and renting a car is the easiest way to reach the Osumi Canyon and Mount Tomorr if you are not booking a tour.
