Abu Dhabi Travel Guide: Where to Eat, Stay & Explore

The UAE capital pairs the world's largest white-marble mosque and a Louvre of its own with desert dunes, island beaches, and a Formula 1 circuit. Here is how to do it well.

Last updated June 28, 202618 min read
Quick answer

Abu Dhabi's unmissable trio is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, and a desert safari into the dunes outside the city. Most first-timers base themselves downtown near the Corniche for walkability, on Saadiyat Island for beaches and museums, or on Yas Island for Ferrari World and the theme parks. Eat your way through Lebanese mezze, shawarma, and Emirati dishes like machboos, and budget three to four days to see it without rushing.

Abu Dhabi is the largest and wealthiest of the seven emirates, a capital built on oil money and big ambition that still keeps one foot in its Bedouin and pearling past. In a single day you can stand inside the marble courtyards of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, see a Leonardo at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, then watch the sun drop behind red dunes an hour out of town.

The city sits on a flat coastal island and a string of neighboring islands, joined by bridges and ringed by mangroves and turquoise shallows. It is greener, calmer, and noticeably less frenetic than Dubai down the road, which makes it a strong base for families and culture-minded travelers who still want beach resorts and theme parks.

It is also a genuinely good place to eat, from old-school Lebanese grills and Emirati home cooking to the Michelin-listed dining rooms that have quietly arrived in the last few years. Add reliable winter sunshine, excellent museums, and one of the safest streets you will find anywhere, and Abu Dhabi rewards far more than a layover.

Best time to visit

The sweet spot is November through March, when daytime highs sit around 24 to 28C (75 to 82F) and evenings are pleasant for the Corniche and outdoor dining. This is peak season, with the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix in late November/early December and big-name concerts around it, so book hotels well ahead. April and October are warm but workable shoulder months. From May to September it is genuinely hot, often above 42C (108F) with high humidity, though hotel and mall prices drop and everything indoors is heavily air-conditioned.

Getting around

Most visitors arrive at Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport (AUH), about 30 to 40 minutes from downtown; a metered taxi to the city center runs roughly 80 to 120 AED. There is no metro, so getting around means taxis (cheap, plentiful, and metered) or ride-hail apps like Careem and Uber. The city is spread out across islands, so plan to drive or ride between sights rather than walk between them; the Corniche, Saadiyat, and Yas are each walkable internally. Renting a car makes sense if you want to combine the desert, Al Ain, or multiple islands.

Good to know

Before you visit

Getting aroundThere is no metro, so rely on cheap metered taxis or the Careem and Uber apps. Distances between islands are real; allow 20 to 40 minutes between major sights and consider a rental car for desert or Al Ain trips.
MoneyThe currency is the UAE dirham (AED), pegged at roughly 3.67 to the US dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but keep some cash for souks, taxis, and small cafes.
Etiquette & dressDress modestly at religious sites: women cover shoulders, knees, and hair at the Grand Mosque (robes are provided), and men wear long trousers. Beachwear is fine at resorts and beach clubs but not in malls or public streets.
AlcoholAlcohol is legal for non-Muslims and served in licensed hotels, restaurants, and bars, but not in casual street venues. Never drink and drive; the UAE has a zero-tolerance policy.
SafetyAbu Dhabi is one of the safest cities in the world, with very low crime and a strong police presence. Standard precautions apply, and respect local laws on public behavior and photography of people.
Language & SIMArabic is official but English is spoken almost everywhere. Buy a prepaid tourist SIM from Etisalat (e&) or du at the airport for easy data, or use eSIM.
Friday & prayer timesThe weekend is Saturday and Sunday, with Friday a half-day; some shops open later on Fridays. During prayer times and the holy month of Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight is restricted, so be mindful.
Before you go

Plan-ahead checklist

Reserve a free timed entry slot for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque online before you go, as walk-in availability is limited at peak times. book a few days to a week ahead
Buy Louvre Abu Dhabi tickets in advance and remember it is closed Mondays. book a few days ahead
Book a desert safari early, especially the highly rated evening BBQ trips, which fill in peak winter season. book 1-2 weeks ahead
If visiting in late November, book hotels and tickets far in advance around the Formula 1 Grand Prix, when prices spike and rooms sell out. book 2-3 months ahead
Pack modest clothing for mosque visits and a light layer for cool desert evenings and heavy air-conditioning indoors.

Abu Dhabi rewards travelers who slow down enough to see past the skyline: the hush inside the Grand Mosque, the rain of light under the Louvre's dome, the silence of the dunes at dusk, and a plate of grilled fish at a neighborhood spot. Whether you come for the museums, the beaches, or the desert, the capital makes an easy and surprisingly soulful base. Start booking those mosque and safari slots, and the rest of the city will open up around them.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Abu Dhabi?
Three to four days is ideal: one for the Grand Mosque and Louvre, one for the desert, one for the Corniche and Saadiyat beaches, and an optional day for Yas Island theme parks or a Dubai day trip.
Where should I stay in Abu Dhabi?
First-timers do well near the Corniche and downtown for walkability and central access. Choose Saadiyat Island for beaches and the Louvre, or Yas Island if you are focused on theme parks and the F1 circuit.
Is Abu Dhabi expensive?
It can be, but it is flexible. Five-star hotels and fine dining are pricey, yet taxis are cheap, many top sights like the Corniche and the Grand Mosque are free or low-cost, and casual Lebanese and Emirati meals cost very little.
How do you get around Abu Dhabi?
There is no metro, so most people use cheap metered taxis or ride-hail apps like Careem and Uber. The city is spread across islands, so renting a car helps if you plan desert trips or visits to Al Ain.
Is Abu Dhabi worth visiting?
Yes. It combines world-class culture (the Grand Mosque and Louvre), beaches, desert adventure, theme parks, and excellent food, all in one of the world's safest cities and at a calmer pace than Dubai.
What is the best time to visit Abu Dhabi?
November to March, when temperatures are pleasant for sightseeing and beaches. Summer (May to September) is very hot but offers lower hotel prices and everything indoors is air-conditioned.
